OUR STORY

GVF was born in the 1980’s to create happiness, smiles, memories for children, big kids at heart and their families from all over the world. ‘Our piece of God’s Earth put to some wholesome pleasure’ has taken many years of hard work by 3 generations of our family, with a fourth generation already learning the ropes. As business, and as a family, we have overcome huge obstacles to keep Green Valley Farm operating today.

We are often asked how and why we started Green Valley Farm, and why we did so in the middle of a paddock in the middle of nowhere. Well, to us, it isn’t ‘nowhere’. It is our home, and we love to share our story and our purpose with everyone that shows so much interest in why we do what we do!

The house when we first moved in

Green Valley Farm’s founders, Pat & Beryl Stewart bought their children, Michael, Irene, Gavin, Kathy & Stephanie to GVF in 1972 to work the land as wool farmers. Ten years later, in 1982, their beloved daughter, Irene, passed away very suddenly just before her 16th birthday. Just before her passing she suggested that we open Green Valley Farm to the public to share the amazing life we had. Our gardens were created in memory of Irene & as interest in our wonderful gardens grew, so did the rest of the farm, with rides and animals added to our collection! With the help of amazing family and close friends, Green Valley Farm was created and piece by piece, has grown into the place it is today.

The early years at Green Valley Farm were spent in nothing more than a house in the valley, an outside toilet, a big country backyard, an old woolshed and an old, weathered tank stand by the back door which provided many hours of climbing fun. From the very beginning, when the kids were still too young to be put to work, Pat and Beryl put everything they had into Green Valley Farm, and to this day, the same passion flows through the kids, grandkids, and great grandkids! Even in her 80’s, Beryl refuses to rest, and still oversees everything that happens on the farm. After so many years of dedicating her life to Green Valley Farm, the only thing she hasn’t achieved is a holiday! All of Pat and Beryl’s hard work and dedication to their vision, was worth it to see GVF bring so much happiness to so many people. We are contacted regularly with people who give credit to Green Valley Farm for many wonderful childhood memories and return to make more memories with their children.

For many years we opened the gates to our home for free. All we asked was that people left only when they felt happy, rejuvenated and perhaps inspired by the old-fashioned fun and friendly atmosphere which we provided and continue to provide today. Back then this kind of fun was the norm. But today, people are no longer encouraged to take healthy risks, and use their own common sense, and as a result, the rising costs of litigation has become something we can’t ignore. As insurance premiums continued to rise, we knew we couldn’t fight it any longer on our own. Much to our disappointment, we were forced to introduce an entry fee to cover our running costs. Running the park off of the backs of our sheep was no longer viable. A fee of $2.00 per person was in place for several years. And the costs kept rising, so our entry has had to go up over the years to cover massive insurance premiums each month to keep Green Valley Farm alive and well today.

The Green Valley Farm family has grown generation by generation, and these additions share the same vision for what Green Valley Farm stands for. As extra hands arrived, the offerings at GVF also expanded. Accommodation options were introduced, allowing people to experience the country lifestyle to the fullest. From listening to the sound of the crickets as they sit around the warmth of a campfire to the brightness of millions of stars unchallenged by streetlights or skyscrapers! Our water park has grown with the addition of a great toddler’s pool for everyone to enjoy and new pieces of playground equipment have been added, and our event facilities have grown to include multiple wedding and party venues, catering options and a licensed bar which can be hired for weddings and parties.

Despite all the good, we have suffered some setbacks. Adding to the pain of losing their eldest Daughter, Pat & Beryl also had to say goodbye to Gavin at the young age of 34. Gavin was an amazing brother and Pat & Beryl’s much loved youngest son. He died from a massive heart attack. It was a huge loss for all of the Green Valley Farm family. He left behind a beautiful wife & 3 amazing children who still play a huge part in our story. A plaque for Gavin has been placed beside Irene’s plaque in the original garden area of GVF and we know that they are both watching and helping from above.

On the 20th of March 2020, at the height of COVID-19 restrictions, the sudden loss of Pat Stewart was a huge loss to Green Valley Farm and to so many more of his family & friends. The people that visit Green Valley Farm are not only our guests, but our family, too, and Pat build an entire legacy around this fact. Money has never been the motivation behind our cause. In fact, we usually run our business at running cost and have often funded the operation with the wool of our sheep. Many who come, return on a first name basis. Countless people come to our gates and ask if Pat is around for a chat. Along with his wife, Pat Stewart is Green Valley Farm's founder, its owner and was always its heart and soul. He did all of this for one thing only, the people. Everything here came from his hands. He built Green Valley Farm from nothing and found great joy in seeing the smiles and memories that were built inside his home. On top of this, Pat is our husband, our father, our grandfather and our great-grandfather and was truly an incredible man. Pat was placed to rest in Green Valley Farm’s Cemetery here on the property; he overlooks the Valley & is keeping a close eye on us all.

Just as it will be for Pat's spirit, and his legacy, the show will go on at Green Valley Farm. We are committed to remaining open, despite the challenges of modern-day society, to welcome anyone into our home and give people challenging, genuine and rewarding experiences for generations to come.
